I’ve gone out for a few runs at night lately. I think that may have to be my running time for the summer months, once the baby is down to sleep and the sun is down as well. Some nights I feel exhausted and it takes a lot of effort to drag myself out, but I always return home feeling more energized and content.
One thing that really blows my mind is how many people are completely unaware of their surroundings AT NIGHT! I have run up behind people, sometimes as many as 3-4 different people in one evening, who do not hear me coming at all until I pass them due to their headphones. One woman was wearing her iPhone headphones and talking very loudly to someone on the phone (seriously, do you have to scream?) and while the dog she was walking heard me coming, she didn’t even seem to feel it necessary to see what her dog was turning around trying to look at as I approached. And then I passed them and she cursed loudly and said that I scared her. Honestly, she scares me… how can you be that disconnected from the world around you?
Just don’t do that, okay? Please pay attention!
I’m going to have a post going up on TheRUNiverse.com next week about a new site, KindRunner.com, launching on June 1. But I wanted to mention the site here because I think it’s a really cool concept.
The basic premise of the site is that you can get new running shoes by turning in your old shoes for those in need. Not just that aspect, they are seeking to truly give runners the personalized experience of a local running store with the convenience of online shopping.
And for the pre-launch period they are having a contest. All you need to do is sign up for their email list and you’re entered to win free running shoes for a year!
Also, check them out on social media because they’re planning more cool giveaways for followers/fans:

Now I must go to bed. But I have fulfilled my #BlogEveryDayInMay requirement, even if I didn’t necessarily blog on the topic.
Hi, Jill…came across and began reading your blog a few weeks ago. Kudos, I’m enjoying it, and in particular I’m excited about the KIND RUNNER kickoff in a few days, thanks for sharing.
KindRunner looks great – thanks for sharing. People who are out and about at night being unaware of their surroundings – this is so crazy! Especially women on their own, in dark quiet streets. It can be really dangerous. And I love running at night. It really is a great way to get energised again.
I’ve realised over time that i prefer running in the morning rather than the evening. I’m not sure why, I think it’s just the way I’m made. Like you, when I’m out and about I see people who are oblivious to the world around them. That’s why I prefer to run without music, so that I can take in the sound of cars, bikes and bird song.
I prefer morning running… but I prefer anytime running over no running! 🙂
