Chocolate Delivery Pie (AKA labor-inducing ideas)

We have a cookbook from my hubby’s side of the family; everybody provided recipes, it was printed and we all received a copy. (Somehow, every recipe that was mine ended up being titled “Jill’s”. That makes it sound like I’m such a culinary genius!)

Anyway, Kevin’s older sister contributed a recipe for Chocolate “Delivery” Pie… a pie that is supposed to make you go into labor within 3 days of consuming. We stopped at the grocery store Friday night after dinner so I could get some fresh fruit and nut butter (completely out, the horrors!) and Kevin said, “We need to buy the ingredients for delivery pie!” Of course, we didn’t remember what they were and Googling from the iPhones was unsuccessful, so we had to go home, find the recipe and then go back out to buy ingredients.

This is not a classy recipe… in fact, 99.9% of the time I probably wouldn’t consider making this… but desperate times desperate measures, right?
Chocolate Delivery Pie to induce labor

Chocolate Delivery Pie
Recipe Type: Dessert
Prep time: 30 mins
Cook time: 5 mins
Total time: 35 mins
Chocolate pie, supposedly guaranteed to make labor start within 3 days.
Ingredients
  • 15 crushed Oreo cookies
  • 1/2 stick melted butter
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 8 oz. milk chocolate
  • 15 oz. Cool Whip
  • 2 1/2 c. mini marshmallows
  • 2 oz. unsweetened baking chocolate
Instructions
  1. Make crust out of Oreos and melted butter. Press into a 10″ deep pie pan.
  2. Pour milk, marshmallows, milk chocolate, baking chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl.
  3. Cook for 3-4 minutes, pausing to stir frequently. Be sure it is mixed well and everything is melted together.
  4. Cool completely.
  5. Fold Cool Whip into chocolate mixture.
  6. Pour into crust and chill.
  7. Garnish with crushed Oreos or chocolate shavings.
Notes

We used a mixture of milk chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate.
We used almond milk instead of conventional milk.

I also got the following tweet sent my way on Friday:

Seems like I need to eat until I make myself sick…

Eggplant Parmesan attempt to induce labor
Eggplant Parmesan sandwich from Verdi Restaurant in Las Vegas. It was successful at intensifying my heartburn!

Other things I’m trying:

  • Sit and bounce on an exercise ball
  • Squat deep and low. Sit on a stack of books or a couple of yoga blocks and try to hang out in the squat for a while.
  • Walking around or standing up. As much as I want to lay down out of discomfort, I’m trying to keep myself upright, in hopes that gravity has an effect!
  • Relaxation & deep breathing

Things I’ve heard that I’m not trying:

  • Give yourself an enema (Laxative effect, okay…)
  • Drink castor oil (more pooping)
  • Eat spicy foods (pregnancy heartburn has been bad enough)
  • Turkey dinner (way too much bother)
  • Dance naked in the moonlight (just insane)

What are the “old wives” tales or more natural ways of triggering labor that you’ve heard?

  1. Father-in-law suggested shrimp. Seven days after The Child was due, we went out for shrimp and coincidentally, that night Laura’s water broke.

  2. I feel your pain. I was due on Friday also and still nothing =( I know 50% of pregnancies go past the due date; but it sure would be nice to be in the other half =) Good luck!

    • I really expected to be early… given that my birthday was the week before my due date and my midwife was out of town. I thought for sure the baby would be born then! Good luck to you too!

  3. That pie sounds amazing! My friend insists that taking a really warm bath made her go in to labor….why she thinks that, I don’t know. Be well!

  4. Notice when you want something you have to wait!!!!!!! You forgot the old stand by “have sex” I think that was thought up by a man.

  5. I never noticed that all your recipes start with your name, sorry about that. You’re just so awesome that every recipe deserved to be called ”Jill’s”. Don’t forget curb walking…one foot on the curb, one foot off. My dr. made me swear I wouldn’t use castor oil, makes delivery really messy in a nasty, make you gag way. I had ” The Westerner” from The Training Table and delivery pie; worked great. Erin’s birthday cake did the trick the next time…think it was spice cake with cream cheese frosting. I don’t think anything really works though, baby comes when baby is ready. Good luck!

  6. When I was pregnant with baby number two, I took a yoga for pregos class. It was suggested that we did not do the Downward Dog position. Supposedly, it induces labor. I didn’t do it, as I was keeping her in as long as possible, but my thought is that if they have the whole class avoid it, there must be some truth in it. Give it a try and see what happens.

  7. My mom used this “method” with her last two kids and I did it with one of mine and it seemed to help but only if things are ready to go or maybe not, who knows. Get a couple of soft dish towels folded several times and put them under your knees and get down on hands and knees and scrub and I mean scrub your kitchen floor. It gets those abdominal muscles going. It actually felt really good on my back too. My mom swears by it and I went into labor the next day when I tried it. All in all the baby will come when it is good and ready but by this point you may be ready to try anything!

  8. Jill, I had to laugh when I read your story about the delivery pie because I’m the reason the recipe is in your cookbook. When I was pregnant with Melissa, a neighbor asked me my due date and informed me that if I hadn’t had the baby by then she would bring me some delivery pie. True to her word, 24 years ago today she brought it. I served it to the family at dinner time and tucked a second piece for myself aside for a bedtime snack (greedy, huh). A short time later we went to bed, I kissed my husband good night, rolled over, patted my tummy and said in my mind “well, this would be a good time”. Almost immediately my water broke (messy, huh). We headed to the hospital and Melissa was born the next morning, tomorrow is her birthday. I called the lady who had made the pie from the hospital and she informed me I was number 4 out of 6 on her success chart. I gave the recipe to Robyn when she was pregnant and you know the rest of the story.
