Riding and Reading

After a whole week off from running, I was starting to feel a little wired.  Slightly crazed.  Work pressures were starting to bother me more than they should.  I do think that week of gentle stretching and easy yoga was good, but I needed to break a sweat and I still have at least another week before I’m allowed to run again. So yesterday I got a 7-day free pass to a 24-Hour Fitness club near my house and got on the bike.

Wow… that made a huge difference in how I was feeling; both physically and mentally.

I’m going to keep using my pass for the full 7-days and then decide if I want to buy a membership.

And on another note, I keep stumbling across articles in the New York Times about running.  Do they always have so many articles of this nature or is it just due to the upcoming NYC marathon?  Whatever the case, here are a few that I’ve found interesting recently:

Hope all of you are having some good running days and that you are adapting to the weather changes.  It’s 48 degrees in my backyard right now (according to my thermometer) and we’ve had 70 mph wind gusts.  Yucky conditions for outdoor running, so at least I don’t have to feel bad about missing perfect running weather right now!

  1. That is funny! I was so tempted to send you (and another friend of mine who is an ultra-marathoner) a link to those articles after I read them in our paper.

  2. I hope you are recovering! It is funny that the NY Times has those running articles… Runner’s World is all about the NY Marathon this month.

If you decide to join 24 Hour Fitness, check out Costco. They have memberships for pretty cheap. Kenny bought a 2-year membership for less than $300.

    Brrrr… I can’t believe you’re in the 40’s already. I am not even ready for the 50’s.

    • The Costco price is exactly the reason I’m trying the club. It’s an amazing deal compared to what they charge themselves!

We had a sudden temperature drop here, it happened way too fast. I’m not ready for it either!

  3. I have also not run in a week (until this morning) so it was biking for me, too. I think it’s the adrenaline of the exercise that helps you to feel better, and handle the stresses of every day life better. Glad to hear it helped you!

And that’s really nice, you can get a week long free pass! Most places around here don’t give you more than one free day!

  4. Hope the leg is recovering well . . . and thanks so much for the links to those articles!!

As for the weather, I am still praying for cooler temps down here in Central Florida! We’ve STILL been having temps up in the 90s! CRAZY.

  5. Glad you were able to work up a sweat but hopefully the leg will feel better quickly! Nothing satisfies quite like a good run 🙂 I have noticed the extra running-articles in the ny times lately too. I’d assume it’s cause of the marathon but at least we get a few more running-reads, right?

That 24-hr fitness deal at costco sounds sweet!! Too bad I don’t have one of those gyms 😦
