San Antonio Arrival

I have arrived in Texas!

We got off to a little bit of a slow start, as the plane had to make some weight adjustments to carry extra fuel. Then we had an extremely slow wait at the car rental. So by the time we finally got to a place for lunch, it was about 2:30 local time, a solid six hours since I had consumed breakfast. We were famished.

After eating we checked into the hotel and headed to the expo. We got our race bibs (numbers, for those not familiar with the term), did a corral change (runners are grouped in corrals based on their estimated finish time, again for those unfamiliar with racing) and explored the expo.

The highlight today was meeting Bart Yasso, a legend in the running world. He was there promoting his book, My Life on the Run. We are trying to persuade him to come to Vegas and speak at our Fleet Feet store. Well, Melinda is doing most of the persuading since she actually works for Fleet Feet and I am just kind of “adopted” by the store!

My hotel has no wi-fi and expects people to pay $9.95 a day for wired access. How come places like a Marriott charge for that but a Motel 6 can provide it for free? So right now I’m working via my iPhone.

I am tired of typing on a little screen. My husband will be here tomorrow, but for tonight I’m going to snuggle up in bed with my 8 pillows, read race literature and try to rest up!

Catch you later!

  1. Yeah!!!! At least you got to eat!!!!

I’ve never understood how and why the more you spend on a hotel, the more the internet access is…how stupid!!! Irritates me!!!!

I’m so excited for you!!! Can’t wait to hear all about your Texas trip and of course the race!!!! Keep the updates coming -even if they are on a little phone…..

  2. I stayed at a Courtyard by Marriot in San Fran and the internet was free there (although not wireless like the website claimed).

Good luck tomorrow!!! You’re going to do great though – no need for luck. You’ve put in the training, now its time to reap the rewards! Take lots of pictures and enjoy the weekend. I’ll keep checking back for updates.

  3. The full service Marriott’s always seem to charge $9.99 for internet access. Yet, the lower cost Marriott properties like Courtyard, Fairfield Inn, etc. normally have free internet. Dumb. You pay more for a full service Marriott PLUS additional charges. And normally you pay more for parking too! As to Alissa’s comment, they probably had wireless in the lobby or something. That is how they can normally get away with saying they are a “wireless” hotel. God, I travel too much.

I am so excited for you, Jill. That should be a great course and a lot of fun. Good luck to you and keep us posted. Oh, any good deals at the expo?

  4. I had the same problem at the Hilton for the TC Marathon, except they wanted $12 or $13 a day (Or $7 for an hour). Do you have a refrigerator in your room? I didn’t at the Hilton. Never again.

  5. I am so jealous!! You met Bart Yasso!

And yes, I have run into that problem everywhere I’ve traveled. The more upscale hotels like Hiltons charge for absolutely everything, and the “lower end” ones give away the internet, etc. I love staying at Best Westerns or Comfort Inns for that very reason!
