No Repeat of Last Monday

Last night as I headed to bed, all I could think was, “I don’t want to wake up early to run.” But I still set out my running clothes and gear, set my alarm and got in bed.

At 4:30 AM, the alarm went off and I dragged myself out of bed. I went into the bathroom and seriously thought about walking straight back to bed to get some more sleep. But I’d already gotten up, I figured it would be silly to just go back to sleep at this point.

So after getting ready and making sure I had something to drink, I was ready to head out the door by 5:00. The sky was a little overcast and some rain was falling. Instead of looking at it as refreshing, my first thought was to go back home because of the rain. That was the ultimate in pathetic thinking because the desert rain falling at a rate of about 4 drops per minute was hardly going to have a Wicked Witch of the West effect on me. I did my short warm-up walk to the gate of my community, took a deep breath, started the iPod and got moving.

And once I was moving? I was in heaven. The morning air felt nice and I moved at a leisurely pace, just enjoying the awakening day. I covered 3.5 miles in 35 minutes and finished feeling great. I’m so glad I actually made myself go this morning, I think the whole rest of the day might have been a little tainted if I had blown off the run.

Hundred Push-up Challenge:
Week 3, Day 1 – 15, 12, 12, 10, 15 = 64
I actually got demoted to the first column for this week! In the weekend exhaustion test I completed one push-up shy of remaining in the same level as the first two weeks. So while I feel like a little bit like a weakling, it’s also probably for the best because these sets were HARD!

  1. I know exactly how you feel. That’s what I went through every morning of our group swims during the winter. It was 35 degrees outside, the pool was 68, with coach Chuck barking commands at us… it was the last place I wanted to be. My puffy warm bed was much nicer.

(I still owe you a race report from Saturday, which is forthcoming. I can sum it up in two words… f*cking hot.)

  2. I was going to e-mail you and request my race report! 😉

I think I would have a much harder time overcoming the urge to stay in bed when I had to go into the cold and then swim. That sounds miserable to me!

  3. Great job getting up and getting out there. Sometimes just getting out of bed is the biggest battle. I would be happy for a drizzly day right now. It has been rather hot and humid here.

  4. Oh I have those mornings at least once a week. I’ve found if I give myself an hour before the run, I usually can get my self out of bed easier. I make a deal with myself. All I have to do is get out of bed and put my running clothes on, then I can surf the internet for 45 minutes uninterrupted while sipping coffee and eating a yummy cliff bar. Then at the end of the 45 minutes I actually am ready to run. But you can’t think about running when you are laying in bed looking at the alarm clock!
