Kick-Off Recap

The kick-off event for TNT was yesterday and it has solidified my excitement for this event.

We received our training schedules (even though they will actually change by our first group run on Saturday as they switch locations around) and training jerseys, assigned mentors, listened to presentations on shoes/clothing and yelled out a lot of “GO TEAM”s.

My mentor is Amber. She is a 27-year-old who participated in the Nike Women’s Marathon last year with TNT, in honor of her nephew who is recovering from leukemia. She loved the experience so much that she is back as a mentor this year.

We also heard from the mother of one of our coaches. She was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in August of 2000 (or 2001, I’m not remembering exactly.) A few years after that she was diagnosed with breast cancer, also an August diagnosis. And then last year she had a reoccurence of her NHL in August. She said that this year she isn’t recognizing the month of August. Can’t say that I blame her!

They had a raffle event with three different prizes. Everybody could purchase tickets for the raffle and one of the prizes was all the raffle money put toward the winner’s fundraising effort. The other two prizes were a camelback/hat set and dinner with our local honoree/gift pack from Red Rock Running Company (that included gear, gels, bars and shoes!). I purchased an arm’s length of tickets, kind of hoping to get the pack from RRRC, but not caring too much because the money all goes to the LLS. Two of the three prizes were won by TNT coaches or mentors. Hmm… I smell some kind of conspiracy! πŸ˜‰

I’m excited to be part of a group that is raising money for such a good cause, I’m excited to receive such expert information to help us work through this tough endurance event and I’m excited to progress through my training and run the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.

But I am scared about the fundraising, it’s such an ambitious goal and with the economy the way it is right now, money is tight for many people. (How much is gas where you’re at? It was $4.19 near my house the other day!)

I am optimistic that with the help of all my family and friends (plus with persistence on my part) I will be able to meet my goal of raising $3500.

  1. Too much wine. Just wanted to preface that before I comment.

I, too, was a tad like “WHAT THE??” with all the cow bells and GO TEAM!!!s during kick-off. But once you get to the group trainings, it’s all business.

You are really going to enjoy this experience, and maybe make a few new friends along the way. TNT is cool like that.

Anyhoo, I’ll host a Mary Kay party or something to help with your fundraising πŸ˜‰
