This week’s Monday Brain Exchange question was:
What are some of your favorite motivational quotes/sayings? Do you have any personal mantras you use while dealing with tough times on the race course?
I have a lot of quotes that I like, but the one that is on my Facebook page is “Life is a marathon, not a sprint.”
This applies to so many things, way beyond running. But I like that it uses running related words. In fact, I use lots of running analogies to get me through other tough challenges in life. This line is important to me because most things in life that are worth doing aren’t something that happens really fast, it takes a fair amount of work and time and dedication… just like a marathon.
As for things I say to myself when things get tough while running, I like to say simple things that kind of make me check in on myself.
Loose… smooth… flow…
By saying those words I remember to not hunch up my shoulders or clench my fists. I pay attention to my foot fall, making sure that I’m landing lightly on my midfoot while keeping my feet straight. I take in a deep belly breath and release tension anyplace that I find myself harboring it. (Or at least, that’s the goal. Sometimes, it’s just not going to happen!)
What words get you guys through tough times?
