Music While I Run

This week’s Monday Brain Exchange question asked:
Do you listen to music when you work out? When you race? What are you top ten favorite songs to get pumped up to?

Let’s address each part…

1) Do you listen to music when you work out?
Sometimes…
I have been listening to audiobooks when I run on my own. But if I’m running with friends or with Team Challenge, obviously I don’t listen to anything. If I’m lifting weights I prefer music over books though. And some days, I just need to lose myself in tunes so I run with those. But I never ever ever ever ever wear both earbuds while running.

And I claim housework as a workout (that’s the only thing that makes it tolerable!) and I listen to music while I do that!

2) Do you listen to music when you race?
Nope. I did make a playlist specifically for the Bryce Canyon Half Marathon, but had a bit of a technology fail with that so I ended up at the start line without music on my iPod.

3) Top Ten+ Favorite Songs to Get Pumped Up
(In no particular order…)
Stronger by Britney Spears
Dashboard by Modest Mouse
Smack My Bitch Up by Prodigy
Should I Stay Or Should I Go by The Clash
Golden Years by David Bowie
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me by U2
Uprising by Muse
Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves
Gives You Hell by The All-American Rejects
Poker Face by Lady Gaga
Right Round by Flo Rida
Let It Rock by Kevin Rudolf
The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Phillips Sousa
Sleepyhead by Passion Pit
Kids by MGMT

Uh… I love music, so I could probably just keep building upon this list. So I’ll stop while I’m just slightly ahead!

What’s your take on music on the run? Gotta favorite song?

  1. Great songs!! I too have so many “favorites” that my list literally goes on for days!!!

    • Your not the anomaly! I don’t listen to music all the time, but I do turn to it when I need motivation. And if I’m on the treadmill, I definitely need some kind of help (music, TV, audiobook, etc.)!

  2. I tend to only listen when I am running indoors as well. I can’t listen to audiobooks or podcast when I run though, I need something with a beat. At times I will use some of the tunes from PodRunner, although all the techno stuff with no words gets repeatative after awhile. My favorite songs to run to would likely be:
    1. Smash Lies by Matisyahu
    2. Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes
    3. Beat It by Michael Jackson
    4. Machine Head by Bush
    5. Bulletproof by La Roux

    • I almost put “Beat It” by Michael Jackson in my list. And I love The White Stripes! I didn’t know Bulletproof by La Roux, looked it up and I’m digging it!

  3. I’ve tried running without my ipod, but my asthma gets going and panic mode kicks in and I’m done. If I can’t hear my breathing, I do so much better. As for songs, I’ve gotta go old school – 80’s Big Hair Rock Bands! The beats are perfect for running and the lyrics get you pumping.

    • Nice…. glam rock is awesome! I should have included some of that! (I just listened to Bon Jovi’s ‘Slippery When Wet’ while working the other day and cranked ‘Unskinny Bop’ when it came on the radio while driving!)

  4. I tend to listen to the same music (Girl Talk) every time I run. It has such a fantastic beat plus it’s the perfect mix of old-school hip hop, alternative, top 40.
