Again at The End

This morning I got up to do a long run but I wasn’t sure how far I was going to go.  I figured it would be 10-13 miles.  I keep thinking I should come up with a legitimate training plan, just haven’t been super motivated to do so.

It was dark when I started and it stayed that way for about 7 miles.  It’s interesting how quickly the daylight hours seem to shorten.  Before long it will be dark by 5:00 PM, and that’s always kind of dreary!  But I’ll take the extra darkness in the morning, especially since this weekend Vegas is predicted to warm back up to the 100’s.  The darkness means the sun isn’t beating down and heating things up.

After about 8 miles I felt compelled to run to “The End of The Vegas” once again. I don’t know exactly why, but that spot intrigues me.  I feel like a small child standing at the edge of the world when I’m there, it has so much beauty and intrigue and danger and unknown ahead.  I crossed the street to get as close to “The End” as I could without actually venturing off-road.  The day was brighter when I approached “The End” today so I could get a better shot to share.

Probably the weirdest thing about “The End” is how sudden it arrives.  Most places I’ve been it seems like there are a smattering of buildings that get closer and closer to one another as you approach the city.  Vegas is the opposite… empty desert then BAM! the city is there.  This video clip shows the transition! (It’s a measly 13 seconds to watch… no time suck there!)

I ended up running 13.47 miles.  As I entered my house and saw that number on my Garmin, for just a split second I considered going outside and running around my cul-de-sac in an attempt to make it a cleaner 13.5 miles… but decided that would just be a little too obsessive!

Now I plan to spend the afternoon taking care of things on my laptop with my feet propped up.  I’m wearing my recovery plan!

Calf sleeves and toe sandals = Recovery!

  1. those look so comfy!!! the flops look extra comfy, especially considering how much my feet ache after a long run. that definitely does look like an abrupt end to the city!

  2. pink recovery socks!!! I want some! they are cute! What an awesome run! And I would have gone out to get it up to .5 because I’m a virgo and slightly obsessive about numbers!!

  3. I love how you left the house without a specific plan, just a desire to get out and see what happens. As well, I’ve never been to Vegas (gasp!) and was intrigued to see what “the End of Vegas” looks like. Thanks for sharing. I’m glad I found you on twitter, I’ll be following your blog!

    • I’ve been trying to be a little more “free” with my running and relax some. Not having as specific routes, distances… just general guidelines! I’ll be following your blog too!

  4. I’ve got a similar pair of sandals – they have memory foam, and cost me a whopping $4! But they feel awesome on my feet after running.

I remember when I first drove into Vegas, about 7 years ago. It was at night and you could see the city from so far away because as you said, it just kind of springs out from nowhere, and boom, it’s there! You can see the lights from so far away, it’s amazing. Thanks for showing the video, that’s pretty cool! That must have been shot from your new, snazzy iphone! 🙂

Thank you as always for sharing a part of your world, especially for those of us on the other side of the country.
