A Little Overheated

Whew…. last night’s run left my blood boiling.

Okay, not really… that makes it sound like I’m angry. And I actually finished last night’s run with such good feelings inside. I haven’t run with my friends for a while and last night I got to see them. Seriously, I have the best pals in the whole world. You should all be jealous! šŸ˜‰ Okay, honestly I just hope that everyone has equally good people in their lives.

But the heat last night? I don’t think my body was prepared to run in that. It might have something to do with the fact that just 2 days prior I was in Utah at nearly 6000 feet elevation scraping frost off my car and then traveled back down to Vegas into our newly arrived 90+ degrees.

I ran at Fleet Feet for our weekly fun run. It was a “special” run, celebrating the 1st anniversary of the store. We had a huge turnout; that was awesome! I hope these people continue to come run with us, that would be great for my friends at Fleet Feet.

It felt like I hadn’t run in eons when I went out for the run, which doesn’t make sense since I had run the day before. It was probably more the fact that I hadn’t made it to Fleet Feet for a couple weeks, but it was still a weird feeling.

During the run my calves were cramping up and I felt seriously overheated. I did have to take a walk break part way through, just to try centering myself. I was annoyed that my pace was about 10 seconds slower than my runs have been averaging lately, but that’s such a negligible amount, I shouldn’t care. I mean… 10 measly seconds. I’m not an elite, so that difference doesn’t mean anything.

Since it was the 1st anniversary run, we had refreshments in store. Thank heaven for fresh pineapple and grapes! They tasted so good and really helped me get my head functioning again!

Now my body needs to re-learn how to deal with the heat… I ran just fine throughout the summer last year, I intend to do the same this year!

  1. It’s funny how different people can be…I wouldn’t worry ONE BIT about a ten-second difference in pace, I would just shrug and assume it was the heat and running with friends distracting me and enjoy my grapes and pineapple. But I’ve never been a competitive person. I get the feeling you and I might be a little different in that regard. šŸ˜‰

    • I’m just very hard on myself, something I’m trying to remedy. You’re totally right, it probably was heat… but some reason I immediately look at it like I wasn’t performing as well as I could. In hindsight, I know full well that I gave it my all that night and that’s all that matters.

I am really competitive against myself, not so much against other people though!

  2. while i welcome the return of the warmer weather, i am not looking forward to the dripping-wet runs, 90+ degrees, 90%+ humidity, etc etc. cold, sweet fruit at the end though.. mmm!

i’m sure the heat had an effect on your pace and you definitely need to be easier on yourself šŸ™‚ like you said, you do need to acclimate to the heat!

  3. You just never know when you’re going to face some issues in running. A few weeks ago, I was having some breathing problems, then hamstring problems. You just never know. Stick with it. That’s all you can do!

    • Joe, you’re so right and it’s something that everyone needs to remember (or perhaps reminded of), issues are going to pop up in running. It’s a universal truth!

  4. It’s hard running in the heat. I avoid it at all costs. We have nasty humidity where I live. It feels like you’re running in a laundromat.

Glad you did it and had a good time with your Fleet Feet friends!

    • The humidity would definitely be an unwelcome addition… the heat can be rough, but at least it’s dry. That’s something you always hear, “At least it’s a dry heat…” but there is a huge element of truth to that.

  5. UGH! 90+ is AWFUL weather! I could never get used to running in it! I don’t know how you do it! But I agree you have to acclimate!!! Good for you for going out there and doing it!!

  6. I agree running in the heat is difficult, and impressive that you went out and ran anyways aside from the warm temps, so you shouldn’t worry about your slower time at all.

Also, in regards to the Amazing Grass I am really enjoying the challenge. I would say for sure my favorite is the Green SuperFood powder, so much better than the wheat grass. Also I am not sure if you saw but they are offering a 15% discount on their site with the code: foodsthatfit. A little savings always helps šŸ™‚

    Have a fun weekend girl!

    • I did see the discount code… that definitely makes taking on the challenge that much more tempting! I will probably take advantage of that, I’d like to see if it makes any difference in how I feel.

  7. yep, the heat kicked in with us this weekend, renewing my respect for those of you who do it in insane temps every summer. I just wish we got the dry heat you did, over the humidity we always get, which sucks royally!
