Hopefully Healing

I finally took the plunge and contacted my doctor about this nagging pain in my hip/glute/hamstring/something…

Well, let’s be 100% honest about this… I finally whined about the pain enough via Facebook that my doctor (who is also my friend and running buddy) CALLED ME to schedule an appointment.

So this morning I slipped in to her office to get things checked. I had built up all kinds of scary scenarios in my mind; torn muscles, stress fractures, bubonic plague… Er, perhaps not that last one.

But she got to feeling me up (this was my butt we’re talking about!) and she said that the basic assessment is that I pulled a muscle in my glute last week, and then instead of just giving it a little time to rest I kept stressing it by running on it every day. The pulled muscle had turned into several trigger points, big knots in my muscles, and those were inhibiting the proper function of my muscles while walking/running and causing pain to radiate around to different areas.

So she worked her magic, breaking down the scar tissue. So now I’m supposed to ice, ice, ice! And massage, massage, massage! And stretch, stretch, stretch! And take it easy for several more days. If the pain is gone I can go out for a short, easy run; but if there is any twinging, it’s back to the ice, massage, stretch and rest.

It’s nice that there is nothing majorly wrong. I haven’t run since my 10K on Saturday. Which means I’m building up several runs that I will have to make up in order to meet my 100 Days, 100 Runs challenge.

Sigh… It was supposed to be a fun, happy-go-lucky challenge. And I had fun (despite running through the pain), but the idea of building up a backlog of runs? That doesn’t sound cool! I’m supposed to be running for the sheer enjoyment of the sport, not to be putting pressures on myself!

  1. haha too funny that the doc called you and made you go in, love it. i’m glad it’s nothing serious, not a setback, and that you have a great excuse for a daily butt massage!!

  2. Massages??? How many are you supposed to have??

Very cool that your doctor called you!! I’m glad it’s nothing major!!! Do listen to your body!!

  3. That is completely hilarious that your doctor called you. What service!

Could you just start your 100 runs/100 days over? You’re not that far into it. Just hit the reset button! So you’ll finish a few days later than everyone else, so what?

    That is my non-professional, non-running-obsessed, non-running opinion. 😉

    • Bethany: I think you’re absolutely right, I need to just hit the reset button. The stress of thinking “Okay, now I have 5 days to make-up is starting to bug me!”

    • Terri: I thought it would be a fun challenge. And it could be if I weren’t falling to pieces right now. But I’m thinking I’m going to just follow the advice of others and just “hit reset”. I’ll be off from the rest of the challenge participants, but maybe I’ll change the rules of that too! It’s making me antsy enough to know that I haven’t run since last Saturday, adding on the pressure of trying to keep track of how many days to make-up is too much for something that is supposed to be fun.

  4. MASSAGES!!! These are the key to everything! You totally need to hook yourself up with a great massage therapist. I’m so lucky that mine is also a personal trainer and nutritionist so we get the holy trinity at once, so to speak.

I’m really glad nothing is overly bad. 🙂
