Monday Motivation

I had something planned for today, but I needed to change it at the last moment because something blew my mind and it is kind of timely, so it warrants bumping the scheduled post.

I never have reason to complain about not wanting to go outside here in Vegas when it is below 30° in the morning ever again.

In Minnesota there was a half-marathon scheduled for the weekend as part of a Winter Carnival. Due to the temperatures the race was cut in half, to a 10K. Do you want to know what temperature prompted this change?

-16°!

(at least that’s the temp I’ve heard and the race organizers say that -15° is their point for shortening the race and -25° is the point for canceling)

Not only did people actually go out there and run, but most of them actually enjoyed their experience. If you need proof, check out this photo on Steve in a Speedo?! Gross! (Do it…. open that link in another browser tab or window… seriously… you need to see it and I didn’t want to just steal his photo and post it on my site. He’s not in a speedo in this pic, that’s just the name of his site!)

Wow!

PS – I am now revoking my comment about not deserving to complain. I’ve adapted to the heat and I can go out to run when it’s well over 100. Because of this, I have earned the right to be too cold to go outside when it is below 30°. My site, my rules!
(Shortest rule ever!)

  1. You earned the right to complain about running in sub-30 degrees temps! You ran 20 miles in 23 degrees with ice and snow!! You walked the walk (uh, ran the run?) so you can make that decision based on experience! 🙂

  2. holy crap, Jill, I just looked at that guy’s post – I can say I also saw crystals this morning, but that guy is hard core! I have to thank him for that tip about the duct tape!!

And yes, you can complain – because I can’t take the heat like you guys can!

  3. Wow! What a picture! Until I clicked through to see that photo, I was feeling pretty good about getting myself outside for a run in 8 degree weather this morning. (I’m in western Massachusetts.) Good grief. I’m not entirely sure my limbs would move in temperatures that cold!

  4. Hey, thanks for the link!! Yep, we still had a GREAT time out there in the weather! But you probably are more suited for the heat than I am – I’ll take 20 degrees over 80 degrees for a run ANY day!!

    Thanks again!!

  5. Yeah…It hurts me to even LOOK at Steve’s photo, but I love showing it to people.

My running rules are closer to yours, but I don’t run if it’s below 30 or over 80…

  6. LVGurl: Yeah, that run is going to be my toughness barometer for a long time!

Terri: Yeah, I thought the duct tape was an interesting tip too! Not one I’ll need a lot, but still…

Joe: Iowa gets plenty cold, I used to live in Illinois when I was a kid and we got some pretty good storms. But those would definitely drive me indoors too!

distanceovertime: I agree, I don’t think my limbs would move in those temps either.

Steve: You guys are hardcore. I’ve really been enjoying your site though!

aka Alice: If I made 80 my cut-off, I wouldn’t run at all during the summer. I get up to run at 4:00 AM during the summer so I can run while it is still JUST 80-85! 🙂

  7. ok…I have to give you kudos for running in vegas in the summer-I’ve worked in vegas outside in the summer and thought I was going to DIE!!! You are allowed to complain!!! I’ll vouch for you!!

  8. I really cannot imagine how cold that is. That picture was really eye opening. I had no idea running in the freezing cold could do that to you! 100 degrees sounds much better!

  9. I’m with Steve – I’ll take 20 degrees over 80 too. BUT I’m a total wuss and I don’t run if it’s below 15. I love running in 30 degrees. That’s my favorite.
