Movie Review: Run Fatboy Run

Run Fatboy Run DVD

There are a lot of really inspirational movies out there for runners. And then there is this one!

Run, Fatboy, Run stars Simon Pegg as Dennis Doyle, a loser who left his pregnant fiance at the altar and hasn’t amounted to much in life since then. When confronted with the fact that she’s found someone new, the idea of a man who is more successful and ambitious than him wooing his fiance and helping to rear his son kicks him in gear. He realizes he needs to do something “more” with his life. That “more” is completing a marathon.

Deciding to run a marathon that is a month away when you are overweight, have never run before (except for running from your wedding!) and are doing it to best someone else isn’t a good way to train, but it definitely makes for some laughs. The movie was directed by David Schwimmer of ‘Friends’ fame, plus features Thandie Newton and Hank Azaria in key roles. Everybody does a good job with their roles and it provides a good mix of humor, motivation and sentiment.

The role of the best friend, Gordon, is played by Dylan Moran, who also had a role in the film ‘Shaun of the Dead’ with Pegg. His character in this film couldn’t be more different from that film and he provides some funny wit and wisdom when it comes to running:

Gordon: Go on then, run!
Dennis: Isn’t there some kind of like… special technique?
Gordon: Well… yeah… you put one leg in front of the other over and over again really really fast.

The commentary on the DVD also provides some funny insight to several scenes. I don’t want to give anything away, but some moments where the actors look “surprised” are pretty legitimate shock due to things happening on set.

So while in the taper phase, if you have to kick back and chill you may as well have a little entertainment in your life. Watch a funny movie!

  1. Thanks for the note on my blog. Maybe we could “meet” with marathon girl at the expo on Saturday. The friend I am meeting up with in San Antonio is also running for TNT so I will be hanging out with that crowd for some race related events.

  2. ~moe, Chris & Sparklie: Light-hearted humor always has a place with me, especially when I’m tapering and need something to keep my mind off over-worrying!

MarathonChris: I think marathongirl and I will be seeing each other at the TNT pasta dinner. If you’re going to be running around with that crowd, there’s probably a good chance we could be in contact!
