No Group Run This Week

Since the majority of my TNT group was in San Francisco for the Nike Women’s Marathon* this weekend, we didn’t have a planned group run. Even those that are running in San Antonio with me were in San Francisco, with the exception of Jim and even he was on vacation in California. It really didn’t matter that much because I decided at the last minute to go to Salt Lake City on Saturday for my grandmother’s 75th birthday party.

So in lieu of the group run on Saturday, I decided I would run the scheduled 15 miles on my own on Sunday…. today. (Maybe I should have signed up for the Nike+ Women’s Half-Marathon so I could earn a Tiffany keychain, but then I would have had to pay $45 for my running time today.)

So let me just be honest, today’s run… it was not fun. I stayed overnight at my parent’s house on Saturday night, so I woke up on Sunday morning and drove the 2.5 hours back to Las Vegas. Immediately upon arriving home I changed into my running clothes to head out. My run today started at about 10:45 this morning.

It was about 76° when I started, but the sun was directly overhead making the day feel warmer. And by the time I finished? It was 91°. I also discovered that I can’t schlep enough liquid on my person for this kind of distance in the middle of the day’s heat. The last 3 miles I was down to a swallow of water and a swallow of Cytomax and was debating with myself about how best to conserve that.

After about 10 miles my right hip started hurting big time. I think I need a foam roller or The Stick to work the tension out of the muscles on my hip and outer thigh.

AND… the wound that I inflicted upon my back during my 18-miler a few weeks ago? Well, it wasn’t completely healed yet and this run re-opened it and caused a whole bunch of new wounds that go around from the left side of my lower back and circle around the side and onto my left lower abdomen. OUCH!

When I got home, I was not a very cheerful person. I was dehydrated and hungry and hot and in a lot of pain.

But none of that matters now because as of today…
I HAVE MET MY FUNDRAISING MINIMUM!

And now that last stressor is gone, I can focus on having a healing week in preparation for my 20-miler next Saturday.

*I just wanted to issue a complaint about the Nike Women’s Marathon website, and all Nike web materials in general… they are trying too hard. Almost to the point where things are unusable. AND WHERE ARE THE RESULTS! You’re chip timing, right? So how come results aren’t immediately available? I wanted to check on all my friends! The Rock ‘n’ Roll series does a good job of getting the results posted and you can even check to see where your friends are on the course while the race is occurring. Just saying: Nike, you’ve got plenty of moola so maybe you should work on the usability of your sites. And chill with all the Flash, it’s totally unusable on mobile devices!

  1. I hated the Nike site today! Iw as trying to check results and possibly live tracking-I couldn’t navigate their site nor did it have anything for the Nike Women’s Half or full….what a crock!!

As for running in the sun-I hate it too! Mind you Vegas is a bit hotter than so cal….but I still feel your pain! I love running in overcast or rainy weather and I so live in the wrong place!!!

I’m sorry your run wasn’t great! I hope you’re not in too much pain!!

  2. Hey!! Good work on meeting your fundraising goal! That is fantastic news!

Sorry about the wound and the timing of your run 😦

I bought a sample box of Cytomax… BLECH. Like, undrinkable. I’m seriously considering wearing my 50 oz. Camelbak full of my Infinit for the marathon, and have Andrew hand me another full Camelbak at mile 12-ish or something. Totally not feasible, I’m sure… 😉

  3. Penny: I enjoy overcast weather too, it’s usually a little cooler and easier to get moving when the sun isn’t blasting you!

LVGurl: I hated my first drink of Cyto… but now I’ve gotten used to it and actually really like it. Accelerade made me physically sick when I tried using that and Gatorade just is gaggy-sweet for me. Maybe if I had a custom Infinit blend like you’re using I would prefer that over any other options, but for now I’m happy with Cyto. And I’m glad that I can actually use a drink provided on the course! That will make it a lot easier to not worry about hauling liquids!

  4. Hey, Congratulations on making your fundraising goal. This past month has really been a good one for you. Sorry you have been sick and hurting. Hope it goes away.

  5. Hey Jill…I will eventually get back into running marathons-but the training for me while working in the film industry is brutal! Half’s are about all I can train for while working my crappy work hours! So I set my sites on Carlsbad since a bunch of bloggers from San Diego are doing it-a chance to meet some bloggers close to LA!!! And since I’m a huge animal freak I found they had an official charity that donated to animals-so I’m even more thrilled!!! I can’t wait. Running for a cause should motivate me more!

Congrats on reaching your minimum goal!! And I had thought about going to San Antonio-it’s really a fun city! You’ll have a blast!!! And maybe I’ll see you brother in Carlsbad…and maybe you!!!

    Run Jill Run!!!

  6. Congrats on reaching your goal!

As someone who ran the Nike race (just the half) I totally agree. The web site sucks. No results until Monday and yes, it WAS chip timing. I’d be interested to hear your teammates’ perceptions of the race because I thought it was kind of disorganized and hyped up…and I LIVE in SF so I didn’t have to travel far to get here. It was fun, but not as good as other races I’ve done.

  7. You met your fundraising goal, WOOOOHOOO! And you even exceeded it, I see! Oh, I am so very glad. And proud that I could help out with some of that. 🙂 I painted the plate for Chris’s little girl today…I hope it turns out okay!
