Group Run #5

This morning my alarm went off at 3:30 AM so I could pop my thyroid pill. I went back to sleep for another 40 minutes or so and then got up to get ready so I could meet my TNT group for our run at 5:15. When you have to drive for 30+ minutes to get anywhere in this town, the early run times end up being REALLY EARLY.

On the schedule for today was 8 miles. And it was 8 miles of AWESOME. I was making really good time throughout the run, I had plenty of energy and for the first time ever I wasn’t feeling sick to my stomach during one of our long runs. YES! We finished in 1 hour and 20 minutes; at the end I absolutely felt like I could keep going.

I really want something that tells me my pace. Several times our mentors and other teammates would call out information from their Garmins and say, “Jill, you’re doing about an 8:27 pace right now…” Most of the time those were meant to caution me to pull back a little and take it easier, but it kind of motivated me to want to run harder. I still average about a 10 minute mile when you take in the 4:1 walk breaks, but I’m pleased with that for now.

The only bad thing is that I have some pretty bad pain on the sides of my big toes, mainly my left foot. I need to go to Fleet Feet and have them take a look at my shoes and my gait. Melinda (one of the main people I run with) said that it seems like I could be rolling in and putting excess pressure on that spot. If that’s the case, I may need new shoes (which would annoy me because I have barely over 100 miles on the current pair). I guess the expense of new shoes is better than the expense of an injury. We’ll see, maybe some inserts will help correct the problem.

And now I need to get some lunch. Have a good one everybody!

  1. Sounds like a great run!

It sucks that you might have to buy new shoes. You might try some insoles instead. When I started increasing my miles I bought some SuperFeet insoles that worked pretty well….

Btw… I just might be doing to LV marathon. DH likes the idea of a weekend in Vegas. I’ll keep you posted.

  2. I love my Garmin. DH and I fight over who gets to wear it.

It’s great you had such an awesome run. Those are so motivating for me. I’m really impressed that you get up so early to run. It makes me feel lazy for not wanting to get up before 8.

  3. Lisa: Definitely keep me updated. That would rock if you did LV. I’m still debating if I’m going to sign up the half or just do regular training until Phoenix after San Antonio.

Adria: The Garmins are so huge, that’s why I didn’t get one. I have a Suunto HR monitor and it has an add-on GPS & speed+distance pod that I may have to grab someday. Or maybe I’ll get it for my birthday. Or at least a Nike+ system. Something… I’m a little obsessed with pacing right now!
