Building Back

This morning I woke up at 4:30 and started to get ready for my run.  I wasn’t planning on getting up at 4:30 and that was actually quite a bit before my alarm was due to go off.  But I just couldn’t sleep, so I decided I might as well get a jump-start on the day!

Snowy morning in Utah on Friday
Snowy weather in Utah on Friday

Yesterday morning when I woke up for work in Utah, it was snowing.  I was not ready for that at all.  So I was glad to be back home in The Vegas where I don’t have to worry about snow… most of the time!  It was probably in the upper 40’s when I got up this morning, but I didn’t check the exact temperature.  I was excited to get a chance to wear capris (I wore my New Balance ones).  I knew it would be kind of chilly, but not so cold I had to wear a coat.  I debated wearing a long-sleeve shirt, but I decided to wear a short-sleeve shirt with my arm warmers.

The crummy sleeves
Scratchy, weird arm warmers

I have the dumbest arm warmers on the face of the earth.  I got them at the expo before last year’s San Antonio RnR as a last-minute purchase since it was supposed to be in the 30’s at race start that day and they were the ONLY ones I could find at the expo.  They were overpriced for what they are: a straight, basic tube that I’ve never been entirely sure which end is supposed to be at my wrist and which end is at the bicep.  The word “Gizmo” is printed on them, but they had no tags to tell me anything else.  But they did the trick then, I wore them at the start of this year’s PF Chang’s RnR Marathon and they were sufficient for today.  However, they are kind of scratchy and I’m on the lookout for some new arm warmers.  There seems to be a lot more variety in this product type on the market now than there was a year ago.  I twittered about wanting some new ones and have already received a lot of suggestions.  I love social media, so many people with instant feedback!

This morning I ran 11 miles and it is really nice to be building back some miles.  I’m thinking I may run a few short miles tomorrow morning too.  Though soon I’ll be in taper mode for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half on December 6.  I’m getting really excited and eager to see how much the energy is amped this year now that it is a Rock ‘n’ Roll race… I’ve got high hopes for you Competitor group!

  1. I love that it’s “cold”, but not sure what that REALLY means (to my Colorado brain). Cold enough to freeze your nose hair when you inhale, cold so that your hands never thaw even after 10 miles, or too cold for shorts???

Thanks for the heads up about the arm warmers. I am actually in the market for some and will keep your comments in mind when I’m ready to buy. Go, Twitter!

  2. I really should check out my twitter more often. I just can’t seem to get into it.

I really like my arm warmers. They are made by Louis Garneau. I bought them at Performance Cycle (it’s a chain, so I am sure you have one near you). They were only $20 and they are comfy and fit great. They have a nice soft fleecy material on the inside and a shinier nylon/lycra on the outside. Cyclists had the arm warmer concept down long before it became popular with runners. I think a lot of the arm warmers that are supposedly for runners are overpriced.

I am glad you are back into your running groove. Great job on 11 miles! Hey…are you really thinking of running Surf City? The half? You know that you have an open invitation to stay here if you do.

    • I had another friend who said the same thing about cycling vs. running arm warmers. I’ll have to take a look at those too!

I am really really really really tempted to do Surf City, probably just the half. I’ll make my decision soon, but I really appreciate the invite… that would be really appreciated! It is always nice to have people at a race that you know!

  3. It has been unseasonably warm here in NJ…usually we are gearing up for the first snow and today it is 70degrees. For the second straight weekend, I ran in shorts!! Weather wise, it has been a year of freakish temps during the wrong time.

    • Weird freaky weather! We’ve had some strange swings in the temps; it gets really cold, then really hot, then cold again. I’m thinking we’re probably hitting a point where we’ll stabilize into typical winter temps… but then that could be wishful thinking.

  4. So…I’m dying to know what you’ll be wearing LV 1/2 race morning. I’m guessing that 6am in Vegas in December will be a little cool in anyone’s book.

I have some arm warmers. I got them at Road Runner Sports (they also have them online). They’re by Moeben, pretty lightweight, and they have a little slot for my iPod Nano. They were about $30. I also have a heavier pair that my bro-in-law gave me (hand me downs) for cycling. I like the lighter pair better for running.

    • Assuming the weather remains about the same as this weekend, I plan on wearing: Running capris, a short-sleeve shirt with arm warmers and a hat! (And socks and shoes and fuel belt, and blah, blah, blah!)

How big is the pocket on the Moeben sleeve? Just big enough for a nano, or any bigger? Could an iPhone fit in there?

  5. I don’t have arm warmers….maybe if I decide on a whim to do Vegas I’ll need to get some! hmm…if you find good ones let me know!

    Nice run lady!! Nice run!

  6. I personally love my arm warmers because I’m an early morning runner and as the sun rises, it gets warmer, but it’s super cold some times when I start. But they’re definitely not scratchy – they’re really soft on the inside. I got them from REI and they only cost about 20-24 bucks, I think. I’ll look the brand and send you a note on Twitter, incase you want to try new ones!

You’re so cute, itching for a chance to wear your capris… 🙂 Come for a visit to the NE – I’ve been wearing mine for weeks now! LOL

  7. Oh my gosh, let us know what you decide on with the arm warmers. I need new ones BADLY after my own arm warmers ate my arms alive during the Chicago Marathon. Ouch. They are SO fired. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to put a large rubber-y seam at the top should be punched in the face (I’m talking about you, Endura)! Although, in all fairness, they are probably fine for biking (which is what they were made for) . . . just not so much for running 26.2 miles in.
