Now just a little bit of info… I was born in Illinois and lived there until I was 7.  Then I lived in Utah.  Now I live in Nevada.  Apparently regional things can make a difference in not only how you say things, but what you call things.  I’ve always known that I call the “carbonated bubbly drink” by a name more popular in the mid-west than here in the west as I’ve had people question me on that one before.

My voice is also a little gravelly/nasal today because I’m still recovering from bronchitis!

But I thought this was kind of fun… Play along!  Leave a note if you do!

  3. That was really adorable. I was kind of confused by a lot of the questions, though–I think I’d probably address a group of people in the same way? I’m like Lindsay, the only thing I pronounce differently from you is caramel. Here are my answers:
    1. toilet papering
    2. potato bug
    3. soda
    4. um, gym shoes? I don’t know. Running shoes if you’re running, cross-trainers if you’re not?

  4. I don’t have a way to record my voice…I’m not tech savvy like the rest of you. 🙂 But I thought I’d answer the questions as phonetically as I can, being from SoDak and all…

  6. Does no one call a bug that rolls up a “rolly polly” besides me and my grandkids? And “tennies “for the shoes. Others pretty much the same except any carbonated drink is coke. Wish I was as smart as Jill and could put my cute face in a video. Hahahaha.

  7. LOL…I think I call things the same thing as you do, except for
    1 – TPing
    3 – Soda

My husband calls the remote a “buster” but I think it’s a word he made up and not a regional thing because he’s originally San Diego and I’ve never heard ANYBODY call it that but him.

  8. I say aunt, caramel and mayonnaise differently than you do. And like Stub, I also call those bugs Rolly Pollies. I’ve never heard of a potato bug! 😉 Other differences: Toilet Papering: TP or TPing, Gym shoes: Tennies or Tennis Shoes, growing up I called it Pop, but now I say Soda.

  9. Oh Jill, you’re so cute. I like to watch this just to pretend that you’re close by!! I really thought it was you who introduced me to the name roly poly for potato bugs!

  10. I’ll have to try doing this this weekend. I didn’t think that some of these words would have different reigional sounds–is the point of this to just hear what people sound like? I am a bit surprised that whoever started this didn’t ask people to do some word patterns that do show regional differences, e.g. Mary/merry/marry, or dairy/Derry, or Don/dawn. Is there a special term for when it rains while the sun is shining?
