RIP Saucony Triumphs

Saucony Progrid Triumph 5
Well, with just over 100 miles on them, I am retiring my Saucony Progrid Triumph 5 shoes. At the beginning of June I went to have my gait analyzed at a local running store and they decided I was a neutral foot. These are the shoes I bought that day. Recently I’ve been having pain on the sides of my big toes and went to have my feet re-evaluated at Fleet Feet. We discovered that I am not really a neutral foot. Very few people actually have neutral feet.
In fact, I have a problem with overpronation, meaning that as my foot strikes while I run it rolls inward and I propel myself off the big and second toes, as opposed to rolling through straight. While trying on shoes at Fleet Feet we tried a light stability shoe from Nike that I thought was pretty comfortable. But when I got back on the treadmill in the store with those, the video showed that I was still rolling inward. So we moved up to a higher stability.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8
Enter the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8… my new shoe. It was kind of nice to put it on and have it feel right. Even more amazing was to watch the video playback after being recorded on the treadmill and seeing the inward roll eliminated. Wow… the power of shoes!
I’m a little annoyed at the other store, because they didn’t check my feet beyond the initial treadmill test. I found it to be much more comprehensive to have the check done first with bare feet, and then to repeat the test with different shoes to make sure that they truly are helping and protecting the feet.
I did a treadmill run with them on Monday and then I went running with my friends on Tuesday night and they felt good. I’m a little unsure if I should trust my own judgment on picking shoes though… I thought the Sauconys felt good too. Hopefully I won’t have to replace these ones short of their expected lifespan due to some new pain though. I am trusting the new Brooks to get me through a good 400+ miles before I have to replace them (replacement will happen before the marathon, but hopefully I can just get a new pair of the same thing!)

[...] I am not going to argue about the importance of good shoes. If you recall, a while ago I had to say goodbye to my Sauconys when my feet were hurting. It seems that I was mis-diagnosed as being a neutral foot when I needed [...]
